About the series
As I advanced in my career, I found photoshoots to be increasingly hurried and impersonal, with large crews well-suited to capturing creatively and technically brilliant portraits, but not particularly vulnerable ones. I realized I missed the intimate moments that punctuate a slow-paced afternoon photographing a friend. What naturally emerges in that sort of setting—warmth, vulnerability, nuance—makes for a fundamentally more interesting image. Moreover, my experiences in therapy as both client and clinician* sparked an interest in finding a more intimate approach.
Reflections developed as a humble alternative to the status quo. It’s just the two of us on set. Hair, makeup, and styling are done beforehand, if at all, and retouching is minimal. More fundamentally, the series offers a chance for public-facing individuals to present a side of themselves that might not fit their typical “brand”. We aim to have an intimate, vulnerable conversation together in a format that is more akin to a therapy session than a photoshoot. The images are sometimes journalistic, sometimes interpretive, but always a celebration of people in all their depth and complexity.
*In December of 2024 I will complete an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. While this series is creatively inspired by therapy, it is NOT to be confused with actual psychotherapy in a clinical or legal sense.
